About Us

A significant number of students enter Contra Costa College without the necessary skills to succeed at college-level work.  The Academic Skills department is committed to preparing these students to succeed in college by offering academic and personal support through a variety of courses and services.  We believe that our students have the capacity to gain the appropriate skills needed to succeed in college when we provide an academic environment that fosters learning and a positive self-image.  We achieve this by maintaining high standards and expectations, offering caring and highly qualified instructors, and providing numerous opportunities to succeed.  Upon successful completion of the coursework in the department, students will be ready to enter English and math courses required for an Associate degree as well as begin courses necessary for vocational certificate programs.  In order to carry out our mission and support our students in their quest for success, the faculty within our department works as a team, collaborates with faculty and other disciplines, and maintains a strong partnership with the counseling department.
